Immunofluorescence antigen tests, also known as third-generation covid tests, are said to be currently the best rapid tests, with results comparable to molecular swabs.

What the third generation test is and how it works

A third-generation Covid test is a fluorescence immunoassay (FIA) capable of rapidly and qualitatively detecting the presence of the virus nucleocapsid protein in human specimens collected by nasal, oropharyngeal or nasopharyngeal swabs. Sample collection methods are similar to those of molecular and other rapid antigenic tests, but response times are very short, even shorter than classical rapid tests.

It involves the use of a fluorescence immunology analyser, a diagnostic device combiningmicrofluidicsand immunofluorescence techniques. The disposable plastic microfluidic chip continuously mixes, reacts and separates for highly accurate analysis.

Immunofluorescence rapid tests

The third-generation Covid tests are therefore innovative tests, based on microfluidic technology and processed through the use of a fluorescence reader. In just a few minutes it is possible to have the result, the reliability of which is comparable to the molecular swab.
